How to Register for a BEE Certificate: A Step-by-Step Guide

What is a BEE Registration and why do you need it?

  1. BEE Registration is a rating system for household electrical appliances and equipment that ranges from one to five stars in terms of power consumption. A product with a higher star rating saves more energy. The purpose of the BEE Registration is to offer consumers information about the product's power usage pattern.

  1. For some products, BEE registration is required, while for others, it can be done freely. Many product categories, such as frost-free freezers, colour TVs, all types of ACs, distribution transformers, tube fluorescent lamps, LED lamps, electric geysers, and direct cool refrigerators, fall under the required list. Washing machines, microwave ovens, ceiling fans, laptops, scanners, solar water heaters, and many other items are eligible for BEE Star Labeling.

  1. BEE Registration is required for all manufacturers of the products mentioned in the mandatory scheme. If the manufacturing unit is located within India, the factory will apply directly; however, if the manufacturing unit is located outside India, i.e. for a foreign manufacturer with no office in India, the first importer or any business organisation assigned as an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) will be required to apply for BEE Registration on behalf of the manufacturer, according to BEE India guidelines. BEE Registration is not available to dealers, distributors, wholesalers, or retailers.

  1. Information such as trademark details, factory details, product details, product samples for testing, and some mandated forms and documentation must be prepared in order to apply for BEE Registration. If the factory is located outside of India, such as in the case of a foreign manufacturer, one importer or business entity will be required to function as an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR).

  1. It may take 25-40 working days to receive a BEE Certificate, depending on the product condition.

How to Obtain a BEE Certificate in India

There are three stages to the BEE registration process:

  1. Registration of a company: In order to get the models registered, the applicant (Manufacturer/Trader/Importer) must first create a login access on the BEE star labeling website. A large-scale industrial registration fee is 1 lakh rupees, whereas a small business registration fee is 25,000 rupees. This business's registration fees, on the other hand, are refundable.

  1. Testing: To register a product under the BEE star labeling scheme, an applicant must have it tested exclusively by NABL accredited or ILAC MRA signatory laboratories in accordance with the applicable IS standard Model.

  1. The applicant can register the model under his account on the BEE star labelling website after the firm registration and testing are approved. The applicant must pay INR 1000 for each product to be licensed.
